Meet the Future Homeowners

The Knight Family

“I want my children to see that you don’t have to give up. I want them to look at our new home and see a story of success.”

 ~ Jasimin Knight

Jasimin has worked very hard to raise her children right and that includes driving them across town twice a day so that they can attend a private Christian school. Yes it’s more work for her but she doesn’t mind as long as her children are safe.

Having lived in public housing for several years, Jasimin has had to worry about the safety of her children a lot. “Coming home was dreaded because there was always someone outside our apartment standing around drinking and smoking and listening to loud music. I did what I could to shield my children from seeing things.” When that proved to be too much she moved her family to her grandmother’s unfinished basement which at first seemed like a blessing; that is until winter came and the cold set in. Forced to use kerosene heaters with the windows cracked open was just too much to manage so they moved yet again.

Jasimin was resigned to the fact they had no choice but to live in substandard housing; that is, until she heard about Habitat. Jasimin read the requirements for homeownership and for the first time had hope that she could provide a better home for her children. Jasimin and her children will be moving into a brand new 3 bedroom/ 1.5 bath, energy efficient home in the McKinley neighborhood of Shiloh. Jasimin looks forward to growing old and gray in a home that she can one day leave to her girls as a “true legacy of posterity and love.”

Jasimin’s house is being sponsored by Publix Super Markets Charities, a charitable foundation founded to care for the community. Publix Charities supports nonprofits, like Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, who are engaged in life-changing work. Nationally, Publix Charities is donating $5.5 million to provide support for over 120 Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and to fund 61 new homes in our communities. Publix Super Markets will help make each house a home by greeting the new homeowners with fully stocked pantries.

About the Sponsor

Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity has received a full house sponsorship of $55,000 from Publix Super Markets Charities, funding that will pay for the up-front costs of house construction.

Previous to this generous donation, Publix has also donated two partial house sponsorships to Asheville Area Habitat.

Nationally, Publix Charities is donating $5.5 million to provide support for over 120 Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and to fund 61 new homes in our communities. Publix Super Markets will help make each house a home by greeting the new homeowners with fully stocked pantries.

Publix Charities began its support of Habitat for Humanity in 1989 with its first contribution to Habitat for Humanity of East Polk County (Winter Haven, FL). The foundation has continued its support, contributing a total of $4 million to more than 80 affiliates in 2015. Now, Publix Charities is pleased to make 2016 the year of its largest gift to Habitat for Humanity affiliates yet.

Also, to offset the cost of purchasing and developing a lot, Habitat has sought out sponsors to “Adopt-a-Lot” for $10,000. This lot is generously sponsored by Tom and Nancy Maher.
