“There is no feeling like the pleasure of having your own home; to put up a picture or have flowers in your home. It is the little simple things that matter.”
-From Edna’s application letter
For as long as Edna can remember, family has been at the center of her life. A devoted mother and grandmother, she has spent decades caring for those she loves and opening her home to family members in need. She has raised her own children, 3 grandchildren, and for 10 years, lovingly cared for her mother. Whether providing a place to stay or a listening ear, Edna has always been someone others could count on. Putting others first was never a burden-it was a way of life.
When she needed a place to live, her daughter welcomed her into her home. While grateful, it was only meant to be temporary. Few relationships can thrive when 3 people are sharing a one-bedroom place. When privacy is in short supply, tensions are bound to rise. It was time that Edna focused on herself. Feeling proud of her accomplishments, and with everyone in the family settled, she set out to find a place all her own.
With costs being so high, finding a place to rent on a limited income was proving impossible. Fortunately, Edna heard about Asheville Habitat’s aging in place program. Through Asheville Habitat Edna will soon have her own place to call home – a place where she can age in place, plant flowers and celebrate the next phase of her life with the comfort and stability of a permanent, affordable home.
