“Being chosen for Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity would change my life by providing me with humble comforts, housing stability after years of managing grief and financial crisis and would give me and my small family peace of mind.”

-From Jacquie’s application letter

Jacquie is a resilient and spirited 76-year-old woman with a sharp wit and strong independence. After leaving her job to become a full-time caregiver for her partner, she faced emotional and financial hardship. Following her partner’s passing, Jacquie lived with friends until she found an affordable apartment—only for the pandemic to disrupt her progress. With few options, she purchased a small RV and secured an affordable site, showing remarkable determination and adaptability.

While the RV provides temporary shelter, it comes with many challenges. Jacquie must empty the sewer tank herself, endure strong winds and cold winters, and live in a very small, confined space. Despite these hardships, she remained grateful but still dreamed of a place to welcome friends and enjoy simple comforts like reliable heat and working plumbing.
