But after the unexpected loss of her partner, her life shifted overnight. One day she was building a life alongside the person she loved, and the next she was learning to move forward with a quiet strength she never knew she possessed.

As a devoted mother, her days are filled with packed lunches, school drop-offs, bedtime stories, and the constant effort to create a sense of security for her children. But behind that strength is a reality she didn’t plan for. The home she could afford was too small, and a path to something better felt increasingly out of reach.

Through Asheville Habitat, hope is beginning to take shape again. What once felt impossible is becoming a real opportunity for a stable, affordable home where her family can have a fresh start and put down roots. For Emma, this isn’t just about walls and a roof; it’s about creating a foundation for her children’s future, honoring the life she shared with their dad, and proving that even after profound loss, new beginnings are possible.

Born and raised in Asheville, Kerri Collosso never thought she would see the day when she would no longer be able to afford to live in her hometown. But when the average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment in Asheville leapt to $1,150 a month, she started to come to terms with the fact that perhaps that day had come.

College educated and employed as a full-time Lead Teller for Wells Fargo, Kerri earned just enough to disqualify her from receiving public assistance, but not enough for a mortgage on her own. Faced with the dilemma of moving away from her family and the support they offered, or paying more than 50% of her monthly income on rent, Kerri chose the latter.

For more than a year Kerri and her partner Keithen tackled the challenge that so many in Asheville face- affording expensive rent while raising a child. While Kerri worked to pay little more than rent, Keithen picked up the slack at home to be there for her son. Then one day, Kerri’s boss mentioned homeownership through Habitat and the rest is history!

Kerri will be able to raise her son in a safe affordable home while still remaining in close proximity to her family. Who said you can’t have it all?
