Meet the Future Homeowners

The Lucy Family

“I believe a Habitat home would provide the light at the end of a
very long road we have traveled.”

~ from Kelly Lucy’s application letter

Sixteen years ago Kelly Lucy moved to Asheville and decided that this is where she wanted to live her life. Eight years later she welcomed her son into the world and so began their journey to find a decent and affordable home in Asheville. Working full time for Ocean X (previously named Gunthy Renker) while going to school part time, Kelly did everything she could to make her dream of homeownership possible, but her efforts to obtain a loan were met with bank rejection letters. “We have struggled between not qualifying for low income housing due to making too much money yet making too little for a standard home loan or an apartment in Asheville.”   Kelly’s story is a common one, but it differs in that she applied for homeownership through Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. As a Habitat homeowner, Kelly can finally live in the city she loves without paying the exorbitant rent prices. In addition, she can provide her son with a home that can someday be his, and a yard for a growing eight-year-old to play in. Kelly and her son will purchase a 2 bedroom/1 bath affordable house in the McKinley neighborhood and the two of them could not be happier. Her house will be sponsored by Habitat’s newly formed Legacy Builders Society and also marks a great milestone as Habitat’s 300th house.

About the Sponsor

We are excited to start our 300th House and to announce that it is funded by Legacy Gifts to Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity! Everyone deserves a decent place to live and that’s why Legacy Gifts – or Planned Gifts – are so important. These gifts make an immediate impact by funding the construction of an annual Legacy Builders Society House. And they also make a lasting impact through an endowment that ensures that our organization will be here many, many years from now working to address the ongoing affordable housing needs of our community.

A big thanks to Jane and Kerney McNeil for their leadership as Chairs of our Legacy Builders Society and Advisory Board.

To offset the cost of purchasing and developing a lot, Habitat has sought out sponsors to “Adopt-a-Lot” for $10,000. This lot is generously sponsored by Scott and Mary Gillam.
