Celebrating National Volunteer Week

Hundreds of Asheville Habitat volunteers were celebrated and thanked at Highland Brewing during a recent National Volunteer Appreciation Week event.

“Seeing volunteers back on the jobsites, in the ReStores, and at in-person committee meetings has been one of the most joyful sights of spring. As the public health situation stabilizes, we are ready to do even more. In the coming year, our programs will rebound beyond pre-pandemic levels serving more families with new homes and repairs. Our volunteers make this possible,” remarked Andy Barnett, Executive Director.

With core volunteers providing the foundation, Asheville Habitat has helped more than 2,100 adults and children through its homeownership and home repair programs since 1983.

Speaking of core volunteers, twelve reached noteworthy service milestones in 2021.

Beth Robrecht celebrates her 20^th anniversary as a volunteer with Asheville Habitat! This former attorney first joined Asheville Habitat as a ReStore (then called Home Store) volunteer. In addition to being an active ReStore volunteer, she has served multiple terms on the Board of Directors and sat on or chaired countless committees over the years.

Some fun facts about Asheville Habitat’s volunteer program:

Asheville Habitat host volunteers of all ages, from students age 16 (minimum) to folks who are in their 80’s and enjoy staying active and engaged in their community, and everyone in between.
151 students (age 16+) from five area high schools contributed 967 hours on the 2021-2022 Student Build House.
Habitat for Humanity International’s Women Build program empowers women to build – and advocate for – affordable housing in their communities. Since 1994, Asheville Habitat’s Women Build program has raised over $853,000 and built 17 homes.
Core volunteers and staff from the AVL and WVL ReStores together diverted 2,277 tons of usable material from landfills in 2021.
