Meet the Future Homeowners

“It could change my life for the better and help me feel more comfortable in my economic situation…I would be forever grateful to be a part of this beautiful community for years to come.”

~ from Garrett’s application letter

For more than a decade, Asheville has been home for Garrett; a place whose mountains, music, and community spirit have shaped his life in every meaningful way. But like many long-time residents who work hard to stay in the city they love, he’s spent years sharing living spaces with multiple roommates just to make his housing costs affordable.

Through the crowded and often changing living spaces, Garrett held onto a quiet dream: a home of his own; a stable place where he and his gentle 100-pound Great Pyrenees could finally stretch out, settle in, and belong. His current rental is now exhibiting black mold, but finding another affordable pet-friendly place to rent has proven to be a nearly impossible task.

But through a partnership with Habitat, Garrett is seeing the mirage of homeownership change into reality right before his eyes. For Garrett, this finally means investing in his own future, not just his landlord’s. With Habitat’s support, he will plants roots, build equity, and create a safe, comfortable home – one filled with gratitude, muddy paw prints, and the mountain sunrises he never stopped believing in. And according to Garrett, he will be forever grateful.
