“The volunteers have a heart of gold and I thank them everyday,” Teresa reflected. “It changed my life and I know it for the better.” Teresa, a disabled and retired nurse of 30 years, beamed as she spoke of the repairs made by volunteers and staff with Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity’s Disaster Home Repair team eight months after Hurricane Helene uplifted her Weaverville home’s septic tank leaving her without basic necessities, ceiling damage, and porch damage. Habitat’s Disaster Home Repair team rebuilt the front and back porch, reconnected the septic tank, got correct permitting to connect the electricity, repair her ceiling, and installed a ramp.
