In 1999, Nikolay and Vera emigrated from Ukraine to the US where they settled in Asheville. Their primary goal in coming to the US was to give the next generation access to opportunities that they lacked in their youth. When they first arrived, the rent in Asheville was reasonable, and for decades, they made the best of their housing situation.

That all changed when Asheville became a hot spot for investors to transition traditional apartments into short term rentals. This growing uncertainty around Asheville’s rental market, is what led the family to Habitat. Buying a Habitat home will give Nikolay and Vera a permanent home to age in place, and a safe environment for their daughter and granddaughter to create lasting memories.

By partnering with Habitat, the Romanenko family’s vision of a better life with rich opportunities for the next generation, has come into focus.  Stable housing will provide a solid foundation for the family to thrive.
