“A house would allow us to create a safer and more accommodating living space, one that supports our daily routines and future health.”
-From Mykola’s application letter
Mykola and Liliia are a mature, close-knit couple who have long dreamed of having a permanent place of their own. They cherish quiet mornings spent in conversation and evenings watching the sky from their yard. But until now, they’ve only known temporariness. Over the years, they’ve moved several times — always chasing affordability due to rising rent, and never quite settling into a place that feels truly theirs. Despite the challenges, they have remained hopeful, resilient, and deeply committed to building a life together filled with love and stability.
Their need for a home is both practical and deeply emotional. With rent continually increasing, staying in a place long-term has become nearly impossible. In their current neighborhood, they’ve faced unsettling incidents making them concerned about their safety. They yearn for a safe space where they feel protected, a place where family can gather, and where their home is more than just temporary shelter. Habitat home ownership will create the permanent foundation they desperately need.
For Mykola and Liliia, owning a home through Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity represent the realization of a lifelong hope: a place to call theirs, built with care and with dignity, and in a safe community. Having their own home would bring them a profound sense of security, a quiet space to age gracefully, and a legacy to hold onto.
They believe in the power of Habitat’s mission, and they hope their story might encourage others in similar situations — especially older adults — to apply. Their journey is a testament to perseverance, and they know that together, with Habitat, they can finally build a safe, affordable, and lasting home.
