Meet the Homeowner
“My goal is to find a place to live where I can stay and enjoy the remaining years I have left on this earth,
in community, and to continue to enjoy the beauty of
North Carolina.”
– From Diana’s application letter
Diana took on the challenge to restart her entire life at age 69 and boldly left her home of 60-years in California. It was just her and her pup as she camped her way cross-country. After a few setbacks with her pup falling ill, she desired a more stable home. She stayed with family for a bit and when it was time to move on, her adventurous spirit led her to visit various family members in different states to see where she connected. She fell in love with Western North Carolina.
At the time she could not find a home, but she did not give up on Asheville. In 2023, she moved into an apartment in Asheville and made it work on her retirement income. As the rent kept increasing, she kept returning to her dream of owning a home but had no clue how to make it happen. She saw an ad for Habitat for Humanity, but it did not seem possible, and she assumed she would not qualify. Almost a year later she saw another ad. This time she went for it.
Diana is so excited by the opportunity to own her own home, one which will allow her to age in place safely and in community. Her advice now to anyone thinking about Habitat is to just apply and not wait! You never know what door will open for you.
