Meet the Future Homeowners
“Buying a home for my family will provide us with a safe place to grow and live; it will mean long-term stability.”
-From Melissa’s application letter
Future homeowner Melissa Mitchell is an Asheville native and single mother to three daughters for whom she is motivated to provide a place to call their own, telling Habitat “I always wanted to give my daughters something better than I had.” Despite her steady employment in the healthcare field, high housing costs have left Melissa to worry about the instability and negative health implications of their current rental.
With few options for affordable housing, the Mitchell family has had to sacrifice quality to make ends meet. Living in subsidized housing, Melissa finds her requests for basic or essential repairs are ignored, and worries about unmanaged mold affecting her children’s health. Aside from unhealthy conditions, her daughters share rooms. As they grow into teenagers, Melissa is even more driven to provide them with space of their own.
Melissa has described her current rental as “shelter,” and looks forward to finally having a place she can call “home.” By partnering with Habitat, Melissa will be purchasing a 4-bedroom single family home for her and her children. Without sacrificing affordability, this family will have a safe and healthy place to thrive.
