Meet The Family

Priscilla McDow

“I have always wanted my own home, a nice little yard, and a flower bed.  Habitat has lifted my spirits up and is giving me a chance to do that.”

~ from Priscilla McDow’s application letter

Priscilla McDow has lived in Asheville since 1995 and is thrilled about the opportunity to own a Habitat for Humanity home. She is delighted about the prospect of moving from a very small, substandard rental unit to a safe, permanent and affordable home of her own. Priscilla works full-time for the Renaissance Hotel as a cook. She is the mother of four grown children and has several grandchildren.

She currently lives in an aging 2-bedroom apartment and is concerned about her safety as the area has recently seen an increase in criminal activity.

About the Sponsor

Women Build is a program of Habitat for Humanity International with one mission: to empower women to take action against substandard housing conditions. Habitat believes that women hold a solution in their hands to move children out of substandard housing – one family at a time.

This year’s is the 11th Women Build House built in Buncombe County! The majority of this house is built by women. No experience is necessary to volunteer on the Women Build house.

Sponsors include:

The Three Marthas is an anonymous sponsorship donated by one family in honor of three family members (all aptly named Martha), two living and one deceased. This is the seventh year that The Three Marthas have been a Women Build sponsor.

The Minigowin Fund is an anonymous sponsorship in its sixth year of financially supporting Asheville Area Habitat’s Women Build!

Global Village Teams in support of Women Build. Global Village is a program through Habitat International that allows people to travel to a new place and work with a Habitat affiliate for a week. The team members also make a financial contribution. This year we are happy to host two Global Village Teams that designated their money toward Women Build!

Each home’s lot has a sponsor that helps to offset the cost of purchasing and developing the land for the home. An Adopt-a-Lot sponsor donates $10,000 and a challenge grant supports the remaining $5,000 needed for each lot. The Adopt-a-Lot sponsor for this home is Jane and Kerney McNeil in Honor of Lew Kraus and Joan Cooper.
