Meet the Future Homeowners

The Harris Family

“Being able to purchase a Habitat home would show my daughter that we too can become homeowners, regardless of our starting circumstances. And also, that you must never give up.”

~from LaQuila Harris’s application letter

LaQuila Harris knows that the weight of the world rests on the shoulders of single parents. Raised in Asheville by a single mother, LaQuila and her siblings experienced that truth first-hand. They also received a first-rate education on the subject of responsibility. While children of single parents often have less, there is one thing they receive in abundance: daily lessons on strength and fortitude. As anyone who knows LaQuila can attest, she took those teachings to heart.

Now, as a single parent herself, LaQuila is teaching her daughter many of the valuable life lessons she learned from her mom. Her mother is the one who taught her about the benefits of staying busy to avoid the negative influences around her. That was an important lesson then, but when the drug activity in her neighborhood led to an increase in violence, the lesson turned critical.

And so it was that LaQuila and her daughter began spending their days at work and school, and their evenings anywhere but home, where they feel unsafe. It is exhausting. Knowing that they could not continue living like that, LaQuila started searching for options and found Habitat.

LaQuila was approved to purchase a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom home in Arden where she will continue teaching her daughter the life-lessons she learned from her mother. LaQuila is thrilled that she will be able to provide her daughter with a safe neighborhood, and the freedom to spend their evenings at home!

Latest Updates

On March 2nd there was a 4-Home Kickoff Celebration at the Arden community. LaQuila, her daughter, and their family members were there to celebrate a new beginning for the Harris Family—homeownership for LaQuila. Later in the month, LaQuila met with a group of college students from Lesley University who came from Boston to spend their spring break volunteering on the jobsite. She told them how thankful and appreciative she was for the experience of becoming a Habitat homeowner.
