Tetyana and Vitaliy moved their family of four from Ukraine to Asheville to be near family. Their own family has since grown to six with the addition of their twin boys. Their 3-bedroom apartment, once the perfect size, has become increasingly cramped over the past seven years. The Yuzvyaks are excited to purchase a Habitat home so that their children can grow and play in a safer, more spacious environment.

Despite working hard to establish themselves in a new country, the family found themselves priced out of the increasingly costly Asheville housing market. Their current living situation has forced Tetyana and Vitaliy to make sacrifices; the family of 6 shares 3 bedrooms and often clash with neighbors who complain about the noise caused by the children playing and just being kids. Their need for a home is more pressing than a need for space, though. The quality of life at their apartment complex has deteriorated over the past few years, including thefts of the children’s bicycles and recent violent crime in the complex. These concerns have increased the family’s urgency to find a safe, new home, but they have been unable to find or afford a 4-bedroom apartment.

Since being approved to purchase a 4-bedroom Habitat home in New Heights, the Yuzvyaks are looking forward to a future with financial security, a safe community, and lots of room for their children — and future garden — to grow. “Our children love to play outdoors,” the family said in their application letter, “They dream of having their own yard as well as a small vegetable and flower garden. Our eight year old boy is eagerly planting his own first garden in a small pot this year!”
