Meet the Future Homeowners
“A Habitat Home would mean many things for us: safety, accomplishment, success, freedom, happiness, togetherness, belonging, and most all, home.”
~ From Lida’s application letter
Habitat’s newest homebuyer has spent years sowing seeds for success and waiting patiently for a very late bloom. As a single mother of five children, Lida has earned her GED, obtained a CNA Certification, and — when nursing jobs alone could not keep pace with Asheville’s high cost of living — completed an Associate’s degree in Business Administration and Human Resource Management with high honors. Despite her academic and professional achievements, Lida juggles two jobs during her industry’s slow season in order to provide for her family and pay all of her bills.
Lida has worked for the past 8 years to move her family out of their current rental, but Asheville’s increasingly expensive housing market and her own apartment’s income-based rent has left her with no obvious path out. She found that the harder she worked, the more difficult it was to save up. “I have been working to pull us out of there for years now,” she said. “I do not want my younger three to have to be there any longer, but at this moment in time, we do not have any other options.” In addition to constantly rising rent and cost of living, Lida worries about her family’s safety in their apartment complex, where illegal activity and harassment are frequent problems.
By partnering with Habitat, Lida will finally be able to reap what she has sown as the owner of an affordable 4-bedroom home in family-friendly New Heights. She looks forward to living in a peaceful and quiet neighborhood where she and her children can feel safe and where her grandchildren can come to visit. In her application letter, Lida summed up her ultimate goal: “I keep striving for something better than what my children and I have. I will not quit until we are where we need to be!”
