The Henson Family
“I can’t wait to partner with Habitat …it gives me another hands-on opportunity to teach my boys while we work side by side”
~From Benitia Henson’s application letter
When Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruits” surely he had someone like Benitia Henson in mind. As a member of the St. John Baptist Church in Arden, she has served as an usher, youth director, summer camp coordinator, and Bible study teacher – and that’s just what she has done in her spare time. She is also employed as a full time electronics associate for Walmart and is the mother of 2 growing boys. While Benitia wears many hats, her mission is always the same: to help others and honor God.
Growing up in Asheville as one of five children, Benitia and her family lived in the same apartment on Livingston Street for 16 years. It was there that she watched her mother give to others, even when her own family was in need. It was there that Benitia learned a lesson she now shares with her own children; it is better to give than to receive. Like a family heirloom being passed down through generations, the art of giving is this family’s jewel.
Benitia’s nature doesn’t allow for self-pity so she became adept at making the most out of every situation. Having lived in the same 2 bedroom apartment for 13 years meant that for most of their lives, the boys had to share a room. It was fine when they were small, but as teenagers with very different interests, they craved their own space. Benitia looked at what she had to work with and came up with a solution. She turned the closet under the stairs into a makeshift bedroom and gave each son a “room” of his own.
Her ability to focus on others had enabled Benitia to accept living conditions that were less than ideal. But when she learned that Habitat was building in Arden, she saw an opportunity and seized it. She is delighted to have been approved to purchase a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom Habitat house.
