“Being able to purchase a Habitat home would give us more financial freedom, security, a safe place to live, and a place our family can grow into.”

~ from Dakota & Leah’s application letter

Dakota & Leah Gillette were high school sweethearts. Raised in Buncombe County, they wanted to stay in the area so their son could have access to the things they enjoyed growing up and be close to family. Like so many others, they started questioning whether they could afford to stay in the place they called home their entire lives. While they had been responsible with their finances and worked hard, continually soaring house prices put their dream of homeownership on hold.

Fortunately, their dreams were not on hold for too long, because they learned about Habitat from their friends and church family. They were surprised by the quality and affordability of Habitat homes and inspired by the empowerment and stability provided through the program. They are excited to be able to stay in the mountains where they grew up, and to watch their son grow alongside family and life-long friends.
