“I’d like to leave something behind for my kids…and what better than a family home!”
~ from Danielle Bethea’s applicant letter
The Bethea Family
Danielle, a Buncombe County native has always worked hard for her family. While she has a good job at Mission Hospital, as a single mother of four she could not afford the rising rent prices in Asheville.
Shortly after moving into her current apartment she and her children experienced a stray bullet traveling down the hallway only to narrowly miss the bed of her sleeping 4 year old son.
A co-worker, who also happened to be a Habitat Homeowner, told her about her experience with Asheville Habitat. Danielle grew hopeful that she too could qualify for the affordable homeownership program. Danielle applied and was approved, and not a minute too soon. The day before she and her children came for their face-to-face interview with the Homeowner Selection Committee, they were again victims of a shooting.
Having endured these acts of violence, it is no wonder that Danielle cried tears of joy when she was told she was approved to partner with Habitat and purchase a 4 bedroom/2 bathroom, energy efficient house in Habitat’s newest subdivision in Arden. Their house will be built in loving memory of our former Asheville Habitat employee Jon Kraus. This house sponsorship is made possible by an anonymous donor and the community at large.
