The Lanovyi/Lanova Family
“Habitat would give us the opportunity to own a home, and that would be a dream-come true for our family.”
~ from Iurii and Galyna’s application letter
For Iurii and Galyna, family is everything. Being thousands of miles away from their native Kazakhstan only strengthened their desire to be together under one roof.
Unfortunately, Asheville’s rental market left them with few options. Finding an apartment that was both handicapped accessible and affordable was next to impossible. In the end, they had to settle on living apart. Iurii and Galyna moved into a second floor apartment with no elevator, and Kateryna moved into public housing.
This became even more problematic when Galyna’s health declined and Iurii, being the paid caregiver to his mother-in-law, also had to start caring for his wife. Suddenly, living under the same roof became imperative.
In searching for a solution, a friend told them about Habitat. Homeownership always seemed out of reach, but when they realized they met Habitat’s criteria, they applied. Now, having been approved to purchase a 2 bedroom/1bathroom, handicapped accessible home in Arden, they will finally be able to live under one roof!
