Meet the Future Homeowners

The Howell Family

“Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity has done an awesome job of giving back to the community and providing a safe and clean environment for families.”

~from Tyerecka Howell’s application letter

As a single parent born and raised in Asheville, Tyerecka Howell has always managed to make ends meet. As a full-time medical assistant for MAHEC, and a part-time employee of Quality Janitorial, she works hard to provide for herself and her son.  But when Asheville turned into a dream destination for newcomers, making ends meets turned into barely making it and Tyerecka began looking for help.

For a time she had benefited from a Section 8 Voucher, but it was short-lived. As she advanced professionally, her subsidy decreased until finally, she had no choice but to forfeit the aid. Unfortunately, paying full price for the apartment did nothing to insulate her from the issues she’s had when paying less. Her car was still stolen, and the mice in her kitchen were undeterred.

When one of her neighbors moved into her new Habitat home, Tyerecka realized that Habitat homeownership could be her pathway to a safe, affordable home. With a baby on the way, Tyerecka has been approved to purchase a 3 bedroom/1.5 bathroom home in Arden.
