Meet the Future Homeowners

“It would be so great to have the security of living in my own place where I can enjoy the dignity of homeownership and have a place my family can visit me.”

– From Jeannie’s application letter

Future Habitat homeowner Jeannie Phillips spent 25 years providing administrative support for students and educators in Western North Carolina, working for WCU for 10 years, followed by 15 years with Buncombe County Schools. Now, as a retiree, Jeannie spends her time volunteering at the Asheville Habitat ReStore, where she regularly covers the bookstore register. Jeannie particularly enjoys meeting new people during every shift and being a part of a vibrant community of volunteers.

In fact, it was a fellow ReStore volunteer who urged Jeannie to apply for Habitat homeownership. In her current rental, Jeannie faces a lack of accessibility as she ages, finding it increasingly difficult to move between her second-story living quarters and communal laundry area in the basement. Additionally, living on a fixed income, Jeannie is already paying over half of her monthly income on rent, and worries about affording the bare necessities, especially with the ever-present possibility of an increase in rent.

The long-term affordability and sense of security that come with homeownership is what Jeannie looks forward to most in her future Habitat home. Jeannie will purchase a 1-story, 1-bedroom townhome, where she can easily access everything she needs and will be free from the threat of costly rent increases. She also looks forward to having a home that she can call her own – and decorate as her own!
