Meet the Future Homeowners

“Having a Habitat home would bring me much joy and a sense of accomplishment as a grandmother to my grandchildren.”

~From Tamara’s Application Letter

When she found herself with no remaining family ties in her home country of Russia, future Habitat homeowner Tamara Golubeva moved to Asheville to be closer to her daughter. Today, she is a grandmother to four with a fifth on the way, with dreams of having a safe, quiet home where she can spend time with her grandchildren. Her current housing, with its safety concerns and space constraints, is both unfit for visitors and increasingly unaffordable.

When she first came to Asheville, Tamara lived with family in overcrowded quarters. By working extra shifts and balancing two jobs in retail and hospitality, Tamara was able to save up and move out. However, due to high rental costs, she found herself in a studio apartment that lacks the space and comfort for family visits. Despite the conditions, Tamara is cost burdened by her rent, paying well over 30% of her gross monthly income to cover housing each month. Faced with continual increases in rent, Tamara sought opportunities for an affordable mortgage that could bring stability to both her life and budget. Through the advice of friends, Tamara found Habitat’s homeownership programs.

By partnering with Habitat, Tamara will purchase an Aging-in-Place townhome with an affordable mortgage in a family-friendly neighborhood. She looks forward to having the peace of mind that comes with financial stability, and to having a yard for her dog to play in. Most of all, valuing family, Tamara looks forward to inviting her daughter and grandchildren to visit in a safe, comfortable home of her own.
