Meet the Future Homeowners

“I want to remain in Asheville and living in a Habitat for Humanity housewould help create that possibility.”

~ From Susan Horton’s application letter

In 2007, Susan was called to the peace and beauty of the mountains in our region, and made the move to Western NC. As Susan puts it, the “good news is out that Asheville is such a beautiful and diverse place to live.” As a result, living costs continue to rise each year. Working hard to keep up with higher housing costs, Susan went back to school to earn her associates degree and gain more work experience, determined to find a sustainable way to continue living in the place she loves.

While Susan has managed to find an affordable rental, she has had to sacrifice quality and safety for affordability. However, the declining maintenance care and recurring causes for safety concerns are the least of her worries. Looking forward to retirement, Susan worries about long-term stability. As a renter, she has to wonder if the low costs will last, if maintenance will get worse, and what happens if the building’s ownership changes hands?

By partnering with Habitat, Susan will have control over her future stability, because she will have ownership of her own home. Susan first learned about Habitat volunteering through her church. Participating in the event moved her, and she became eager to partner with Habitat herself. Now, as an Aging in Place homebuyer, Susan will purchase a 1-bedroom townhome designed to accommodate changing needs as she ages. She looks forward to having a yard to garden in and a vibrant community surrounding her, all in the beautiful town that she is proud to call home.
