Meet the Future Homeowners
“The opportunity for homeownership through Habitat has been a seed of hope planted in my being.”
~ From Donna’s application letter
Donna Cook moved to Asheville for work in 2012 and quickly found a loving community among her church and neighbors. Despite the sense of belonging she found in Western North Carolina, she is unable to remain in her temporary rental situation. There she is burdened by the cost of rent and unable to save for a home in Asheville’s competitive housing market. Donna is excited that through Habitat’s homeownership program, she will be able to stay in the city and with the people that she loves.
While Donna has been able to supplement her fixed income by working part-time as a caregiver, due to chronic health concerns, she has been unable to work enough hours to achieve financial security as a renter in the current market. And until she found Asheville Habitat, she had given up on her dream of owning her own home again. Donna and her husband were homeowners before his passing in 2010. “I still have a homeowner’s mentality; the joys and responsibility of stewardship,” she said. “To own my own residence again would be a renewal of a forgotten dream.”
Donna will be purchasing a 1-bedroom Aging-in-Place townhome with an affordable Habitat mortgage. She will no longer be burdened by high rental costs or have to worry about temporary leases. Donna is eager to contribute to her own home’s construction through the Sweat Equity process, and she is excited to discover a new community and establish a sense of belonging among her neighbors at New Heights.
