Meet the Future Homeowners

“Habitat allows seniors to live the American Dream, giving us a chance to build wealth and self-worth.”

-From Barbara Coleman’s application letter

Throughout her application process, Barbara left an impression, lighting up the room with her enthusiasm each time she stopped in to drop off paperwork or learn about her next step. To her, the process was no chore, but an exciting opportunity and an answer to prayer.

Hailing from Georgia, in 2019 Barbara accepted an offer to transfer to Asheville. Drawn by the beautiful scenery and the promise of employment, she quickly fell in love with the place. But, like many of our Aging in Place candidates, Barbara swiftly realized how difficult it is to find affordable housing in Asheville. Envisioning how her needs would change in the future, made the search for an apartment that much harder. With limited options, Barbara found herself in a 4th floor apartment with limited accessibility, and an unsettling lack of safety.

Although Barbara looks forward to the security and pride that comes with homeownership, she is even more excited to get to know the people around her, telling us, “The benefit of a Habitat home is the neighbors.”

Despite her infectiously sunny disposition, Barbara has struggled to find a community where she feels she truly belongs. As an Aging in Place homeowner, she will be surrounded by likeminded people in a peaceful, supportive community, making New Heights the perfect home for her!

Barbara’s future home, 1 of 8 Aging in Place units built with Universal Design features to promote aging in place, will be a 1 bedroom/1 bathroom townhome on New Heights Drive.
