Meet the Future Homeowners
It is hard for me to ask for help because I have always been a helper.”
~from Kay Ponder’s application letter
Kay Ponder is a resilient, hardworking individual. A jack of many trades, Kay often helps others with her unique skill set. As a professional carpenter, contractor, and inspector for 20 years, Kay was the crew leader for the first Habitat Women Build. At age 50, she took a risk and changed careers. Hanging up her hammer in exchange for a knife, Kay started a new career as a professional chef.
After graduating first in her class from AB Tech’s culinary program, Kay went to work for Sierra Nevada Brewery where she cooks, and, in true Kay fashion, tends to the grounds of the brewery when needed.
Like many, the onset of the pandemic forced Kay to take stock in her life. Caring for her aging parents motivated Kay to think about her future. With family being her greatest motivation, Kay wrote “I long to reassure them that I will be okay.”
Kay has always been quick to tell other people about Habitat’s affordable homeownership opportunity. When she learned about Habitat’s new Aging in Place program, she reached out to several friends. Everything changed when one of those friends had the insight to ask, “What about you Kay? Don’t you need an affordable home too?”
With valuable skills and a giving heart, Kay will be a vibrant member of this multi-generational community.
