Meet the Future Homeowners
“Buying a Habitat home would mean living my final years in a secure and stable environment, with respect and dignity.”
From Ann Cox’s application letter
When we designed our new Aging in Place (AIP) homeownership program, we considered the characteristics of an ideal homebuyer. The ideal candidate would be age 55 or older, in need of decent housing, and have the ability to pay an affordable mortgage. The candidate would want little more than a modest home to enjoy a well-earned retirement; nothing too fancy, just a simple home, designed for changing age-related needs. The ideal candidate is Ann Cox.
Retired educator and librarian, Ann sold her home in Virginia to spend time with her children and grandchildren.
Stunned to find out that rent in Asheville was off the charts, Ann moved into a 4th floor apartment, meaning she would have to keep moving as she aged.
Being friends with a Habitat “core” volunteer in Virginia, Ann was familiar with Habitat’s traditional homeownership program. But she didn’t need that much house. Asheville Habitat’s new one bedroom, one bath one-level AIP townhome is perfect for her and her beloved dog Henry.
Asheville Habitat’s Aging in Place townhomes will be built with Universal Design features including bathroom grab bars, zero steps, and other design details that enable homeowners to age with safety and dignity.
