Meet the Homeowner
“I have always dreamed of owning my own home one day. When I gave birth to my daughter, I knew I wanted that dream to become reality.”
– From Quiana’s application letter
Quiana Benjamin is an Asheville native, a mother, a teacher, and soon, she will also be a homeowner in Habitat’s New Heights neighborhood. In her application, Quiana revealed that providing a better life for her daughter is her main driving force. However, through her work in childcare and education, she has proven that her nature to nurture extends beyond her own family. Quiana’s co-worker wrote, “everything she comes in contact with, she helps to grow.”
To provide her three-year-old with a safe and decent place to live in Asheville’s intense housing market, Quiana has had to sacrifice affordability, paying 43% of her monthly income, before taxes, on rent, leaving her with a budget stretched thin. Despite this sacrifice, Quiana is left wanting for a space she can call her own, where she can feel rooted, watch her daughter grow from a strong foundation, and build long-term community.
Inspired by meeting friends who have achieved homeownership through Habitat, Quiana began to feel that her dream of owning her own home was within reach. By partnering with Habitat, Quiana will purchase a 2-bedroom townhome in West Asheville’s New Heights, and still have room in her budget to save for a rainy day or invest in her daughter’s future. Quiana looks forward to having “a place to create memories with my daughter and cherish for a lifetime.”
