“A new start to a better life is what I need.”

~from Jasmine Jones’ application letter

“Home” means something different to everyone. Author Matthew Desmond describes home as, “a refuge from the grind of work, the pressure of school, and the menace of the streets. We say that at home, we can ‘be ourselves.’ Everywhere else, we are someone else. At home, we remove our masks.” Meet Jasmine Jones, a mother of three, who has put in the work to make this aspirational idea of “home” a reality for her family.

Jasmine spent much of her childhood in two very different neighborhoods. In the home of her Godparents, she felt serene and safe. Her second home was quite the opposite. At the age of 15, Jasmine lost her Godfather and the safety his home provided. Jasmine finished high school, a mother of two. Walking the stage at graduation with one child on her hip and the other by her side, she had a clear vision of what she wanted for her future, and the motivation to make it happen.

Working as a CNA, Jasmine has raised her family away from the unsafe neighborhood of her youth.  Sacrificing space for safety, this family of 4 shares a 2 bedroom apartment. Instead of friendly neighborhood kids to play with, the children are hindered by neighbors who complain and criticize when they leave their bikes out or play too loud. She wants better for her children. Working with Habitat has put that goal within reach.

Jasmine tells Habitat, “I would like to grow with my children in our own home, and make them feel safe and comfortable as they grow into themselves.” At their new 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom single family home in New Heights, a scenic, family-friendly neighborhood, Jasmine’s daughters and youngest son will have room to grow. There, they will have space to call their own, room to study and play, and the pride in knowing that their mother did it all for them.
