“Buying a Habitat home will give me and my family a sense of responsibility, pride in ownership and the obligation to work hard to maintain payments and upkeep of a home of my own.”
~from Regina Lewis application letter
Born and raised in Asheville, NC, Regina Lewis has witnessed Asheville’s transformation from the small mountain town of her youth, to the thriving metropolis it is today.
Working as a housekeeper for the Grand Bohemian Hotel, Regina experienced the pros and the cons of Asheville’s expansion. Lateral wages in relation to the rising cost of rent created housing instability; but the city’s popularity also ensured job security. Like many local service industry professionals, she found herself in a Catch-22: move to a town where the rent is affordable and hope to find work or stay where the work is plentiful and hope to pay the rent.
Not wanting to give up on her hometown, Regina assessed her options. She and her sister could stay in their current apartment and tolerate the occasional shooting, or they could look for another affordable rental and hope for the best. Buying a home seemed out of the question. They had lived in apartments their entire life, so homeownership was a foreign concept. That all changed when Regina learned about Asheville Habitat’s homeownership program.
Regina applied and was approved to purchase a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom home in Shiloh. Through Habitat, Regina will attend Homebuyer Education classes, and work with volunteers and staff to construct an energy efficient home for her and her sister to live out their dreams.
