“We would be very grateful for a house. Our kids want to play outside, ride on bicycles, and have their own backyard.”
~from Borys Doniev and Svitlana Donieva application letter
In 2016, the Doniev family immigrated to the United States. The decision to leave their country was agonizing. They endured two years of the Ukrainian civil war to stay in their home, but when armed militants began pressuring their oldest son to join the fight, staying in Ukraine was no longer an option.
Following in the footsteps of family members who fled earlier, the Donievs settled in Asheville, NC. As a skilled mechanic, Borys had no problem securing employmentwith Diesel Power Truck, where he works to this day.
Finding safe, affordable housing for the family of seven, proved a bigger challenge. They took what they could afford, only to realize that affordability came at a cost. The kid’s bikes were stolen so often that they stopped replacing them. And the kids no longer felt comfortable playing outside. While grateful for the roof over their heads, they never quite felt at home.
After learning about Habitat through a current homeowner, they decided to apply. Having been approved to purchase a 4 bedroom/2 bathroom home in Shiloh, the Donievs will soon begin the next chapter of their life in America.
