Meet the Homeowner

Fifteen years ago, Yolvi Boyd moved to Asheville all the way from Peru. Today, she is a future Habitat homeowner, an educator, and a single mother to a 14-year-old daughter who she describes as “the light of my life and my everything.” With her daughter as her driving force, Yolvi applied for Habitat homeownership with hopes of providing a safe, healthy place that this family can be proud to call home.

Currently, the family of 2 lives in an outdated trailer which lacks insulation, letting warm air out in the winter, and letting mold in year-round. As a result, Yolvi’s daughter suffers from worsened allergies, and even furniture is damaged by the pervasive mold. Due to limited affordable housing options, Yolvi has been forced to sacrifice quality for affordability.

Employed as an educator for the YWCA’s women empowerment and family justice programs, Yolvi is passionate about her non-profit line of work. She tells Habitat that she loves being a resource to mothers in the Asheville community, and working with people in crisis to help them find stability, with an understanding that community support is essential for people to thrive.

By partnering with Habitat, Yolvi will enter into a community of homebuyers, volunteers, and donors, dedicated to building a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Yolvi looks forward to living in the family-friendly New Heights neighborhood, in a 2-bedroom townhome that is safe and healthy for her and her daughter, without sacrificing affordability.
