Asheville Habitat’s newest homebuyer, Brittni Fate, is a single parent and pre-school teacher. With a positive attitude that demands to be shared, and a penchant for helping others, Brittni has worked in healthcare and hospitality over the years, and now enjoys working in early childhood education.

She is also an Asheville native who has always dreamed of homeownership – a dream that she inherited from her own mother. Brittni grew up in public housing after the city’s Urban Renewal practices displaced her family from the East Riverside neighborhood. Since then, the barriers to owning a home in Asheville have only continued to grow.

With limited affordable options in the area, Brittni has had to put her dream of homeownership on pause. She makes additional sacrifices just to have a home she can afford. In her current rental, neglectful and unresponsive maintenance has left Brittni responsible for handling concerning pest issues and completing her own repairs.

By partnering with Habitat, Brittni has finally found the opportunity to buy a home that is healthy, safe, affordable, and most of all, hers. In her new 2-bedroom home, in West Asheville’s New Heights neighborhood, Brittni looks forward to having space for her daughter to invite friends over and taking pride in having a place that she and her daughter can call their own.
