Meet the Future Homeowners

“Buying a Habitat House would mean the world to us. It would feel like a huge step, and make all my hard work as a parent feel worth it.”

From Brian Owens’ application letter

Navy Veteran, Asheville native, essential worker, devoted father… these are just a few ways to describe future Habitat homeowner, Brian Owens. As an essential custodial employee with Buncombe County Schools, Brian’s work over these past few years has been integral to protecting the health and safety of the community. After giving so much support to Asheville educators and students, Brian is ready to focus on his goals, securing that same peace of mind for himself and his son at home.

Although his work is essential, with rental rates Brian has struggled to keep up with sky-rocketing rent and has had to accept unsafe living conditions. When he learned about Habitat’s homeownership program on the news, he was inspired. Purchasing a safe and affordable home would be the perfect opportunity for him and his son. By owning a home, they would have plenty of room to grow and spend time together.

In their new 2-bedroom, 1-bath home, Brian and his son will be able to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with having a place to call your own, and the financial freedom to save and plan for the future. The Owens family will purchase a previously owned Habitat home that is being renovated to brand-new standards. To preserve Asheville’s affordable housing stock, Habitat often exercises the option to repurchase homes for sale on the open market.
