The Vara Family
The 2009 Asheville Area Habitat Golf Tournament, scheduled for October 12th at Champion Hills Golf Course, will sponsor the home for the Vara Family. The family is comprised of three generation of women – Josephine (grandmother) Mary Ann (mother) and Mary Ann’s 10 year old daughter.
In search of a safer environment and more temperate climate, the Vara family moved from Buffalo, NY to Asheville more than five years ago. The family currently pays a disproportionate amount of their income towards rent and their apartment complex is riddled with violence and drug activity. With mom and daughter sharing a bedroom, they are living in an overcrowded situation due to limited income.
The Vara family was familiar with Habitat, having volunteered with the organization through their church (The Rock of Asheville). They were thrilled to learn that they qualified for Habitat’s affordable homeownership program.
