The McClain Family
Mary McClain grew up in Asheville and has lived here most of her life. For the last five years she has worked as a medical technician with autistic children at Blue Ridge Group Homes.
Mary was referred to Habitat by Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a program that her children, age 11 and 13, participate in to increase the presence of positive role models in their lives. The McClain family has become accustomed to daily violence, drugs, and gang activity in their apartment complex and the apartment unit itself has been neglected by management. They are determined to rise above their housing situation and excel in life.
Both children express a deep desire for a home in which they can feel safe, where they can play outside, and where they can “grow closer as a family”.
Mary was ecstatic to learn she met Habitat’s qualifications. The family has since visited Enka Hills and was delighted to see kids riding bikes and rollerblading without worry. They feel this move will help their family immensely and they are grateful to their house sponsor Eaton Corporation.
