The goal of the 2009 Building on the Dream House is to bring together local Baptist churches to build a Habitat house in tribute to the life and legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., himself a Baptist minister. “Building on the Dream” embraces and celebrates cultural diversity and religious solidarity, which Dr. King referred to as “the beloved community.” The beloved community includes everyone — regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, creed or religion.

The Buzulan Family
Nicolae and Luiba Buzulan moved to Buncombe County four years ago from Moldova, hoping to find work and create a better life for their children. They currently rent a three bedroom apartment in West Asheville with their four children ages 2-12.
They have been unable to qualify for a conventional mortgage due to their income and family size. Their current residence is small for the family as the three year old and twelve year old daughters share a bedroom, while the youngest sleeps in her parent’s room. Their apartment has severe mold problems in each room. Nicolae has scrubbed the walls and repainted them several times, but the mold always returns. In addition, they have had trouble with flooding, sewage backups into the apartment, and leaks in the windows.
Nicolae enjoys his job with Carolina Transportation and most of his routes are local. Luiba has worked in the past, but currently stays home with the children due to the high cost of child care.
The children, although naturally apprehensive about changing schools, are generally excited about moving to Enka Hills and making new friends. They are thrilled that the neighborhood is so close to the recreation park where one of the children plays soccer, and in general, the family finds the location to be more convenient for their daily errands.
