Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® and Habitat for Humanity® International (HFHI) joined together to create the “Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity” alliance in 2005, to help address the complex issue of poverty housing. The relationship is helping Habitat for Humanity to increase its annual house production by hundreds of homes per year in the United States and around the world.
The 2009 Thrivent Builds/ Lutheran house being built in Asheville is the second Asheville Area Habitat house being built as part of the alliance. Thrivent Financial and four local Lutheran churches provided 75% of the funds needed for the build.

Sonia Nunez and her son
The Nunez Family
Sonia Nunez is dedicated to educational and employment advancement and she is committed to providing her 5-year old son with a safe and decent place to call home. While working full time at Vista Family Health, where she has already been promoted once, she has been going to school part-time. This has been quite a commitment for Sonia and its been hard for her to spend limited time with her son as she pursues her education. However, she sees it as an investment in her future and she knows it will benefit both of them in the long run. Soon, she will have earned an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from AB-Tech and she is excited about the doors that will open.
Sonia currently pays a disproportionate amount of her income towards rent and the rental unit has mildew and mold problems. She is very excited to have a healthy and affordable home in a safe neighborhood. Her son looks forward to playing outdoors and making new friends in the Enka Hills neighborhood.
Sonia’s friends, family and co-workers are thrilled that she has qualified for Habitat’s homeownership and they plan to support her by volunteering on the construction site.
