"Habitat is a win-win situation. The volunteers are rewarded by productive service, the houses get built, the homeowners provide sweat equity, and everybody wins.”
– Asheville Habitat Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. Over 1,800 people volunteer with us each year. Asheville Habitat has a variety of volunteer opportunities where you can partner with others to help fulfill our mission of building simple, decent houses for families currently living in inadequate conditions. In addition, you will have an opportunity to learn new skills and meet a variety of people.

Volunteer Spotlight: Two AAHH Volunteers Receive DOVIA Award

Longtime Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity volunteers Diana Geter (R) and David Lee (L) were each awarded a 2008 DOVIA Volunteer Award on April 25. DOVIA stands for Directors of Volunteers in Agencies, a local networking group for volunteer program staff.

Diana began her relationship with AAHH as a homeowner almost twenty years ago. She and her family moved into their house prior to Christmas in 1989. Diana has been a dedicated member of the AAHH Family Selection Committee for nineteen years and she is a long-standing advisor to the AAHH Board of Directors.

In addition to her work with AAHH, Diana is involved in outreach ministries to homeless people in the Asheville community and with women and men incarcerated in local prisons. She is the very proud mom of three daughters and six grandchildren, and she enjoys being a godmother as well. Diana is an active member of the Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church.

David began volunteering with Asheville Area Habitat in the spring of 1988. In the fall of that same year, he joined the Family Selection Committee. In addition to serving on the Family Selection Committee, David has spent a great deal of time working at our construction sites. He led a construction crew on Saturdays for four years.

David is an active member of Central United Methodist Church. He is also a member of the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and the Mortgage Bankers Association of Western North Carolina. David is employed at Carolina Farm Credit, and has lived in the Asheville Area for twenty-five years.

Diana and David's contributions to our organization are invaluable and we are so pleased that they have been honored by DOVIA and the community at large.
