“Safe and decent shelter is a basic human need that knows no geographic boundaries. Here in Buncombe County and in partnership with five other countries, we strive to eliminate substandard housing."
~ Lew Kraus, Executive Director of Asheville Area Habitat.
Habitat tithes "a house for a house". Every time we complete a house in Buncombe County, we send funds to one of five International countries to support their building program. Our tithing partners are: Bangladesh, Egypt, Guatemala, Haiti and Malawi.
In 2011, we were named a Top Tithe Donor in the medium affiliate category. Additionally, Asheville Area Habitat was presented with a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of being one of few like-sized affiliates to increase their tithe in FY2011 (over FY2010).
Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity has tithed more than $384,000 since 1986, serving an additional 129 families on top of the 220+ Buncombe County families we have served since 1983.
In addition to financially supporting the building of Habitat houses in Guatemala, Asheville Area Habitat also organized service trips to Guatemala in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
