7.  What appliances come with the house?

Each house has a new Whirlpool refrigerator and range.

Partner Families have the option of purchasing a Whirlpool washer and dryer by combining a small monthly payment with their mortgage payment.  Appliances have a one-year warranty.

Each kitchen has a removable cabinet where a dishwasher can be located.  The homeowner would be responsible for purchasing and installing a dishwasher which can be done after the family moves in.

A lawnmower is also provided for the homeowner.

8.  What size are the lots?
Lot size varies depending on the lay of the land and size of the house.  Habitat wants to be a good steward of the land in order to build as many affordable houses as possible, so lots tend to be small.

9.  Does Habitat build garages?

No.  Many houses are built with storage sheds that are provided and are located behind the homes.  No garages or carports are allowed in Habitat communities.

10.  Who chooses the lot or house plan?
At this time, Partner Families do not choose their own lot or house plan.  Asheville Habitat works with a variety of house plans by different architects.  The  construction foreman works with staff to determine how many houses will be built, what size house will be built on which lot, and what plans will be used.

11.  What is meant by "Sweat Equity"?
Habitat is unique in that no down payment is required to purchase a home.  However, each Partner Family must complete a minimum of 200 hours of their family’s time in the building of their home.  These hours are detailed in the family selection section

12.  What will my neighbors be like?
In one word, DIVERSE!  Partner Families are all very unique.  While some Partner Families only have one person in the household, others have six!  We have Partner Families who grew up in Asheville, while others have grown up in Africa, Latin America, Ukraine, and Iran.
In selecting homeowners, Habitat does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, familial status, marital status, sexual orientation or age.

13.  How long does it take to be in a house?
The application process can take up to four months or longer.  Once approved, plan on at least six months before closing on the house.  This is all dependent on the building schedule, applicant participation, and completion of all paperwork and required documentation.
